“I realised that everyone needs God, even if they don’t understand it or admit it. So, the main thing for me is to share about Him,” said Dammar, a former police man from Central Asia.
Dammar* lives in Central Asia where the majority of people are Muslims. He’s lost his influential job, been in prison and is considered crazy for his faith in Jesus. This is his amazing story.
“My name is Dammar. I’m a former police officer. A few years ago, when I was still serving in the police and considered myself a Muslim, I received the terrible news that my son was diagnosed with stage four leukaemia. I could do nothing to save my child. The doctors didn’t offer much hope either.”
Seeing how upset he was, Dammar’s mother tried to give him a Bible, but this just made Dammar angry. He started ripping up the pages of the Bible, threw it on the floor and left.
“When I returned, I saw that somebody had collected what was left of that book, but somehow one torn-off page was still on the floor. I picked it up and began to read. It had verses from Psalms:
‘I will protect him, because he has known my name. He will call to me, and I will hear him; I am with him in sorrow; I will deliver him and glorify him, I will fill him with the length of days, and I will show him my salvation.’
“I was a strong man, but this Scripture, which I read for the first time in my life, made me burst into tears. I couldn’t control myself at that moment. I didn’t want anyone to see me with this piece of the Bible in my hand and tears in my eyes.”
The next day, Dammar apologised to his mum, and she told him her whole church were praying for him and his son. He visited the church secretly holding those scraps of the Bible passage he had read and then went to the hospital. His son should have been close to death, but instead a doctor ran out to meet Dammar and told him that he didn’t know how, but that his son was making a recovery.
Dammar remembers: “That day, I experienced the happiest moments of my life. I accepted Jesus into my heart and dedicated my life to Him! I decided that everyone should know about Him. I didn’t want to miss anyone, so I told everyone I met about what Jesus did in my life. A few days later, my son returned home from the hospital. We were all very happy. My son’s condition improved day by day.”
“All the staff at the police department where I worked heard about Jesus from me. Some people said I was crazy, but I didn’t care about people’s opinions anymore.”
After a while, Dammar was called into his bosses office, where he was told to stop talking about Jesus. Dammar didn’t want to lose his influential job, but he couldn’t stop sharing about what had happened to him, so he was eventually fired. He then became a teacher, but was also sacked for telling his students about Jesus. This led him to him being arrested and imprisoned for over two weeks, but he wasn’t afraid – he just shared his story with his former police colleagues!
On leaving prison, Dammar became a taxi driver, using journeys to tell those in his taxi about how God had healed his son. One day a local Muslim leader got in the taxi and asked if he would pray for a local sick woman. Dammar agreed, saying it wasn’t him, but Jesus who does the healing.
Dammar shared his story and about Jesus with this woman, and then prayed for her. He left, but weeks later he met bumped into the woman, and she had also been healed. She was amazed and wanted to know more about Jesus and Dammar prayed with her as she chose to become a Christian. This lady is now part of their underground church and, like Dammar, can’t stop sharing about Jesus herself!
Dammar’s house church is considered illegal by the authorities, and services have been raided and stopped by the police. One these occasions, Dammar says he isn’t afraid as he knows how the police work. When he has since been arrested and detained he just shares about Jesus with them. Many of his former colleagues think he has gone crazy, but Dammar says:
“I know that each of them needs God, and one day, sooner or later, they will remember my testimony.”
And that is in fact happening. Two of his former colleagues came and asked Dammar to secretly pray for them. The wife of one of the men was very sick, and these friends were worried. Dammar explains:
“We talked with them for a long time, and I prayed for them and for his sick wife. She has recovered, Thank God! For fear of losing their jobs, these policemen have not accepted Christ yet. They asked me not to tell anyone that they had seen me and that I had prayed for them. But now, they know about Christ, and they have a firm testimony that God can give healing and peace in their hearts. I hope one day they will turn to Him.”
Amazing!
