Silpi* and her husband are secret Christians from Bangladesh. She’s from a Hindu family and her husband is from a Muslim background. Because of the threat of persecution, they have not openly expressed their faith in their village, but in nearby towns many people have come to know Jesus because of their ministry.
Sadly, in September, a secret meeting Silpi was hosting in her home was attacked by a group of local Muslims.
“They just came in and started destroying everything,” said Silpi. The mob attacked her and hit her, while others vandalised her home. Most who were gathered ran for safety – some tried to protect Slippi, but were pushed away.
After much struggle, Silpi managed to escape, leaving her home and children behind.
This all happened while Silpi’s husband was away for work. That night, he got a phone call from a fellow villager: “Are you or are you not a Christian?” the villager asked over the phone.
Anxious about what might happen to him or his family if he told the truth, he lied saying, “No. I’m not a Christian.”
“Come back and prove it. You should see your house too”. The villager described how the attackers has ransacked their home. “This is what happens to Christians here.” The villager said. Who then put pressure on him to leave Slippi.
Sister Silpi, tired, in pain, hid in a relative’s house. But they too were afraid to keep her there for long. “They’re going to come here. They’re going to find you and if you stay here, our home would be gone too,” said her relative.
Sister Silpi had no choice but to leave. She too didn’t want to cause trouble for her relatives.
Thankfully, Open Doors local partners were able to support Sister Silpi with some emergency items when the incident happened and are actively looking to support her in the future.
Please use the points below to pray for Slippi and her family.
For Silpi and her and her children. Pray for God to protect them wherever they are now. Ask God to bring her peace and healing as deals with everything she's been through.
For the villagers and the attackers who stirred up trouble for this family. Pray that God will reveal himself to them and they will know God's love and truth.
For her husband who is struggling due to threats from other villagers. Pray for God to give him strength and courage to stand strong in his faith in the Lord and be reconciled with his wife.
