On February 1, 2021, the military took control of Myanmar, ending years of democracy and bringing back a harsh dictatorship. Life changed overnight for many people—especially for Christians like Pastor Myint* and his family.
Pastor Myint, his wife May*, and their children lived peacefully in a mostly Buddhist village. They worked hard to be kind and helpful to their neighbors, and over time, they were accepted and respected. Myint even built a home that became a place for Christians in the area to gather, learn and grow in their faith.
But not everyone was happy about it. Some religious leaders didn’t like what he was doing. Still, the village’s elected leader protected them—until the military took over.
After the coup, the military replaced local leaders with people who would support their cause. These new leaders didn’t protect Myint’s family. Instead, they incited others to spread hate against them.
One day, a group of men were encouraged to attack Myint and his sons. Thankfully, someone warned them, and they escaped just in time. But the attackers still came looking for Myint, and turned up at the family home, threatening May and their daughter. They were unhurt, but left scared and anxious. Unable to find Myint and his sons, the group set on and killed two villagers who had shown an interest in Christianity.
Eventually, the whole family reunited in a new, safer place—but their old home was looted and burned down.
Now living in a different area, Pastor Myint and his family have little money and no steady income. But they haven’t given up. With help from Open Doors local partners, they received food and support and they continue to care for others who have been displaced due to conflict and persecution. May says:
“We have been in the ministry for many years, and we have seen many people come to Christ. Because of the war and persecution, many believers are displaced, and we have lost connection with them. Please pray that God will be with them and that they will remain faithful to Jesus.”
*Names changed for security reasons…
That the rights of Christians and other minorities in Myanmar would be protected despite the ongoing conflict
That Pastor Myint and May's ministry would see many come to know Jesus despite all they've been through
That Pastor Myint and his family know God's love, care, provision and protection
That God would take away any anxiety and fear from the family and bring people to them who will support and stand with them.
