CENTRAL ASIA: MUHAT’S SECRET BAPTISM

Recently, a secret baptism took place somewhere in Central Asia. One of those being baptised was Muhat*.

Muhat grew up in a Muslim family in a culture where family honour is very important. Choosing a different religion is often seen as bringing shame on the whole family. Because of this, Muhat knew that if he became a Christian, his family would not accept his decision.

FINDING A REAL CONNECTION WITH GOD

At first, he wasn’t looking for Christianity. But then he noticed a big change in his friend Zinnat*, who had secretly become a Christian. Zinnat treated people differently. He showed more respect to women, admitted when he was wrong, and often spoke about forgiveness. Most of all, he seemed to have a close relationship with God.

Seeing this made Muhat curious.

Zinnat invited him to a secret gathering of young Christians. As Muhat listened, he realised he had many questions about life that his faith had never fully answered. For the first time, he met people who seemed to have a real connection with God and with each other.

He kept returning to the group. The more he learned about Jesus, the more convinced he became. Eventually, he made a decision that changed everything.

One evening, surrounded by his new friends, Muhat gave his life to Jesus and became a Christian.

It was the start of a new life, but also the start of persecution.

The believers had prepared him for this. They had learned how to stay strong when facing opposition, and many accepted persecution as part of following Jesus. One believer told him:

“It is an honor to be persecuted, just like Jesus. Surely it is normal to experience persecution as followers of Jesus!”

DISOWNED AND FORCED TO LEAVE HOME

Not long afterwards, Muhat’s family discovered that he was a Christian. His father was furious. The hardest moment came when his father told him he was no longer worthy to be called his son.

Eventually, Muhat was disowned and forced to leave home.

The rejection was painful, but he was not alone. His new church family welcomed him, helped him find a place to live, and supported him as he rebuilt his life. Through the help of Open Doors, he was also able to find work and start again.

Although losing his family was heartbreaking, Muhat was grateful for the love and support he received from fellow believers.

And despite everything he has been through, Muhat was ready to be baptised. For him, baptism is a sign of the new life he has found in Jesus, a sign of the connection he now feels with God. Please pray for Muhat using the points below…
