Over 100 people have been killed and around 5,000 forced to flee their homes in Nigeria after a wave of violent attacks by Islamist militants. Many believe these are revenge ATTACKS against Bishop Wilfred Anagbe, who recently spoke to the U.S. Congress about the persecution of Christians in his country.
The attacks began on May 24 in Benue State, where gunmen stormed several villages, killing dozens. Survivors say the attackers returned the next day to shoot anyone left alive. By Tuesday, over 40 people were confirmed dead.
These villages are part of the Makurdi Diocese, led by Bishop Anagbe. After he spoke out internationally, he received threats from both extremist groups and the government. “This is horror. This is terror,” said Fr. Oliver Ortese, a local priest.
The same weekend, militants attacked villages in Taraba State, killing 42 people, including 24 from a Methodist church. Survivors described waking up to gunfire and running into the forest to escape.
In Plateau State, more attacks followed. Even a funeral was targeted, with gunmen opening fire on mourners. Many Christians took to hiding in forests and mountains, too afraid to return home.
John Samuel, Open Doors legal expert for sub-Saharan Africa said:
“When the very diocese whose bishop courageously testified suddenly finds itself burying scores of its people – including from his own village – serious questions are raised. Many don’t feel safe anymore, only because they identify as Christian.
“Christian persecution in Nigeria has reached such levels that observers struggle to fully document each atrocity before the next begins.
“Accountability remains scarce for these grave violations of the fundamental rights to life, liberty and freedom. The Nigerian government is failing to protect Christians who are killed in indiscriminate attacks. We call on the Nigerian government to do everything in its power to protect vulnerable Christian communities.
“We call on believers worldwide to lift up in urgent prayer those struck down in this unimaginable suffering.”

That all those affected by these attacks will be consoled by God’s unfailing comfort
For militants to encounter Jesus and turn from their wicked ways.
For much greater protection and justice for vulnerable communities in Nigeria
That God would take away any anxiety and fear from the family and bring people to them who will support and stand with them.
